99% of the time: it's the backup battery
Most modern garage door openers sold in Australia since about 2015 include a small 12V sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery inside the motor housing. Its only job is to operate the door during a power outage — usually good for 20–40 cycles before it needs grid power again.
The controller monitors the battery's voltage and resting capacity. When the battery deteriorates below about 30% (which happens at 3–5 years depending on heat exposure), the opener emits a series of beeps on each cycle to warn you. It will continue to operate normally — the beep is purely advisory.
Replacing the battery — B&D
- Unplug the opener from mains power.
- Remove the light lens cover by squeezing the clips at the bottom edge.
- Locate the small black SLA battery — usually 12V 7Ah, clipped beside the controller PCB.
- Photograph the wiring (so you know which spade connector goes where), then unplug both leads.
- Lift the old battery out, slot the new one in, reconnect leads (red to +, black to −).
- Replace the cover, plug mains back in. Run one full cycle to confirm the beep is gone.
Replacing the battery — Merlin
Identical procedure on Merlin MR855, MR655 and similar — battery sits beside the controller under the light lens. Some newer Merlin models have a side access panel instead of a removable lens cover; check your installation manual.
Replacing the battery — Steel-Line
Steel-Line uses the same 12V 7Ah SLA in most residential openers. Access is via the rear cover plate (not the front light lens). Two Phillips screws and the panel lifts off.
Where to buy the battery
A 12V 7Ah SLA battery is a generic part — buy from Battery World, Jaycar, Bunnings or any electronics retailer for $40–$70. Brand doesn't matter much; pick a name you've heard of (Powersonic, Vision, Yuasa). Avoid the cheapest no-name options as they tend to fail in 12–18 months.
Other causes of beeping
- Lockout mode active. If the door beeps and refuses to move, lockout has been triggered (usually accidentally by holding the wall button too long). Hold the wall button again for 5–8 seconds to disable.
- Photo beam fault. Some Merlin models beep continuously when the safety photo beams are misaligned or blocked. Check the beam LEDs are both solid.
- Controller fault. Rare. If a new battery and beam check don't fix the beep, the controller may need replacement. Call a tech.
