Sliding versus swing — which suits your driveway

Sliding gates run on a horizontal track parallel to the fence line, sliding sideways to open. They require a clear setback area on one side of the driveway equal to the gate width — meaning a 4m gate needs 4m of clear fence run for the gate to retract into. Sliding gates suit narrow entries, sloped driveways (where a swing gate would foul the ground), high-security applications (harder to force), and any property where the driveway is short and parking up to a swinging gate is a problem.

Swing gates pivot on hinges and arc through the driveway entry as they open — like a giant front door. They suit wider entries with flat ground at the gate position, look more traditional and residential, and tend to be cheaper than sliding gates for the equivalent width. The trade-off is the swing clearance — you need 1.5–2m of clear driveway in front of the gate so vehicles aren't sitting in the swing arc when the gate opens.

For driveways under about 5m wide we usually recommend swing. For wider entries, sloped sites or anywhere security is the primary driver, sliding is the better call. We assess the site as part of the free quote and explain the trade-offs honestly.

Motor selection — Centsys, Merlin, ATA and what suits each application

Centsys is our default for residential and rural sliding gate installs across the Darling Downs and Southern Downs. The D5 EVO SMART (500 kg gate capacity), D6 SMART (600 kg), and D10 SMART (1,000 kg) are South African-built, engineered for hot dusty inland conditions and rated for high cycle counts. Solar-ready out of the box, smartphone-controllable, and field-serviceable with widely-available parts. Best fit: rural and acreage properties, properties without easy mains power at the gate, heavy gates over 200 kg.

Merlin gate motors offer the strongest smartphone integration (myQ) and HomeKit/Google Home compatibility. Best fit: connected-home households where the gate is part of a wider smart-home setup, suburban residential installs where smartphone control is the priority, lighter gates under 300 kg. Slightly more expensive than equivalent Centsys units but the app experience is superior.

For swing gates we install Centsys V-Series (V300/V400/V500 covering progressively wider gate leaves), or Merlin/FAAC swing operators where smart integration takes priority. ATA gate motors are excellent value for budget-conscious installs but with a more limited feature set.

Solar power and the rural Darling Downs reality

A meaningful share of our gate installs are on rural-residential or working farm properties where running mains power 200m down the driveway to the gate is either prohibitively expensive or simply not viable. Solar power is the answer — and modern solar gate kits are reliable enough that they're now our default recommendation for any gate more than 50m from the meter box.

A typical solar gate kit includes a 30–80W solar panel (sized to the gate's expected cycle count), a deep-cycle gel or lithium battery, and a charge controller integrated with the gate motor. The Centsys D5 EVO SMART and D6 SMART are designed for solar from the factory — the install just adds the solar panel and battery to the standard motor wiring. Total premium over a mains-powered install: $800–$1,500 including the panel, battery and mounting hardware.

Civil work — concrete, cabling and what's actually included

Gate installs almost always involve some civil work — concrete piers for the gate posts, a concrete pad under the slider track, cable conduits between the gate and the house intercom or power source, and sometimes vehicle detection loops cut into the driveway surface. The civil component can be a meaningful share of the total project cost and is often where the difference between a low-ball quote and an honest quote shows up.

Our standard residential gate quote includes the civil work — pier excavation, post-mix concrete or steel-reinforced footings depending on gate weight, cable runs in conduit, and reinstatement of any disturbed driveway surface. We'll spell out exactly what's included on the written quote so there are no surprises mid-project. For projects requiring significant pre-existing site works (extending a driveway slab, electrical upgrade to the gate area, vehicle loop cuts in established concrete), we'll itemise those separately.

Access control — keypads, intercoms, vehicle loops and smartphone

How you and your visitors actually open the gate is one of the more important decisions and it's often left until last. The standard residential setup is a 4-button remote for household members and a wired or wireless keypad on the driveway entry for visitors. Keypad codes can be set per-user and changed regularly, which is much more secure than handing out remotes.

Video intercoms (Aiphone, Comelit, BPT) add a layer of security — you can see who's at the gate before you let them in, and modern units integrate with your smartphone so you can answer the gate from anywhere. This is increasingly the standard spec for new acreage installs around Highfields, Cabarlah and the Ipswich rural-residential fringe. Vehicle detection loops cut into the driveway automatically open the gate as an approved vehicle approaches — useful for households with frequent vehicle traffic but adds $400–$700 to the install cost.

Smartphone-only access (no keypad, no remote, just the myQ or Centsys app) is increasingly popular with younger households but we always recommend keeping at least one physical access method as a backup — phone-dead-at-the-gate is a frustrating place to be.
