Types of Roller Doors — Buying Guide (Domestic vs Commercial)

Adam Duce, Limitless Team 25 May 2026 8 min read

    TL;DR — Quick Summary

Roller doors fall into six broad categories: domestic single-skin (most common residential), insulated domestic (foam-filled curtain), light commercial shutters (shop fronts and small workshops), industrial roller shutters (warehouses, three-phase motors, heavy curtain), security shutters (perforated or solid steel for retail after-hours), and fire-rated shutters (required for building code compliance in specific commercial settings). The right choice depends on opening size, frequency of use, insulation needs and security level required.

    Six categories of roller door

"Roller door" covers a wide range of products. Picking the wrong category for your application either overspends by thousands or underspecs and fails early. Here's the practical breakdown.

    1. Domestic single-skin roller doors

The standard suburban garage door. 0.42mm Colorbond curtain, residential-rated tubular motor (or manual operation), single-phase wiring. Sized up to about 6m wide for a double garage. Brands: B&D Roll-A-Door, Gliderol Domestic, Steel-Line GlideRol. From $1,290 manual / $1,890 motorised.

    2. Insulated domestic roller doors

Same form factor as a standard domestic but with foam-injected curtain. R1.5–R2.0 insulation. Significantly quieter operation as well as cooler interior. Brands: Gliderol IM5, B&D Insul-Foam, Taurean Thermalux. From $2,290.

    3. Light commercial roller shutters

For shop fronts, small workshops, motor mechanics, light industrial bays. 0.8mm curtain, commercial-cycle motor (up to 50 cycles per day rated), reinforced tracks. Brands: Gliderol Commercial, Taurean Sentinel light-duty. From $4,500.

    4. Industrial roller shutters

Warehouses, distribution centres, large workshops, agricultural sheds. 1.0mm+ curtain, three-phase motor (single-phase available up to about 5m), heavy-duty barrel, wind-locked tracks for cyclone areas, optional safety edge sensors. Brands: Taurean Sentinel, Gliderol Industrial. From $9,500 for a 6m wide unit.

    5. Security shutters

After-hours retail protection. Either solid heavy steel (maximum security) or perforated steel (allows ventilation and window display visibility). Often installed inside an existing shopfront in addition to the day-time glass door. Brands: ATDC, Trellidor, Boss Security. From $3,800 for a single shopfront.

    6. Fire-rated roller shutters

Building Code Australia compliance for openings in fire-rated walls. Certified to AS1905.2 with -/60/30, -/120/30 or -/240/30 ratings. Drop on smoke detection via integrated FIP relay. Always specified by the building certifier. Brands: Taurean FireGuard, Smoke & Fire Shutters Australia. Project-quoted from $8,500.
