Before you start
Three things to confirm before attempting to pair a new remote:
- The remote is the right brand and model. A B&D remote will not pair to a Merlin opener, and vice versa. Third-party 'compatible' remotes often look identical but use different rolling codes — stick to genuine handsets.
- The remote has a fresh, correct-spec battery. Pairing fails with weak or wrong-spec batteries.
- The opener memory has space. Older openers cap at 15 paired remotes. If you're at capacity, you'll need to wipe and re-pair.
B&D Tri-Tran 4-button
The Tri-Tran is B&D's standard 4-button residential remote, paired with most Controll-A-Door P Diamond, Controll-A-Door 4 and SmartphoneControl-equipped openers.
- Locate the small recessed SLT button on the back or side of the opener motor head.
- Press and release SLT once. A red LED will illuminate steadily — you have approximately 30 seconds.
- Within the window, press and hold the new Tri-Tran button you want to assign to the door for 1–2 seconds.
- The LED will flash twice and turn off. Test the remote — the door should respond.
To pair additional buttons (for example, button 1 for the garage door and button 2 for a second opener), repeat the process for each button individually.
Merlin C945 PrimaryHand
The C945 PrimaryHand is Merlin's standard 3-button rolling-code remote, paired with most Tiltmaster, Silentdrive, MR655, MR855 and MT800EVO openers.
- On the underside of the Merlin opener motor head, lower or remove the light cover.
- Find the small rectangular Learn or P button on the circuit board.
- Press Learn once. An adjacent LED will flash slowly — you have approximately 30 seconds.
- Press and hold the C945 button you want to assign for ~2 seconds, release, then press once more briefly.
- The opener LED will pulse and settle. Test the remote — the door should respond. Replace the light cover.
ATA PTX-5v2
The PTX-5v2 is ATA's standard 5-button TrioCode rolling-code remote, paired with GDO-6, GDO-7 and GDO-9 openers.
- On the side or back of the ATA opener controller, find the Door Code or P button.
- Press and hold until the adjacent LED flashes, then release. The receiver is in learn mode for ~12 seconds.
- Within the 12-second window, press and hold the PTX-5v2 button you want to assign for at least 2 seconds.
- The opener LED will flash to confirm. Test the remote — the door should respond.
The PTX-5v2 supports up to 30 paired buttons across all paired remotes — plenty for any residential property.
When pairing fails
If you've followed the steps and the remote still won't pair, run through this checklist:
- Battery: Confirm the remote has a fresh, correct-spec battery.
- Brand match: Confirm the remote is genuinely the correct brand and model for your opener.
- Memory full: Older openers cap at 15 codes. Wipe memory and re-pair only the remotes you still use.
- Timing: The Learn / SLT / Door Code window is short (12–30 seconds). Have the remote in your hand before pressing the Learn button.
- Power: Confirm the opener has mains power and responds to the wall button.
If none of the above resolves the pairing, call (07) 4615 4481. We carry stock B&D Tri-Tran, Merlin C945 PrimaryHand and ATA PTX-5v2 remotes on every service van and can pair on a callout.
