Broken Garage Door Spring? Here's What To Do Right Now

    TL;DR — Quick Summary

If you've just heard a loud bang from the garage and the door now won't open, your torsion spring has almost certainly snapped. Do three things immediately: stop using the opener (it will burn out trying to lift the full door weight), don't try to lift the door by hand (it weighs 50–110kg with no spring support), and call a garage door technician. Most broken springs can be replaced same-day for $290–$390 in the Toowoomba region.

First — stop using the opener

We see this every week: someone hears the bang, the door opens halfway, they hit the remote a few more times to "see what's wrong" — and now they need a new opener motor as well as a new spring. The opener is sized to assist a spring-balanced door, not lift 50–110kg of dead-weight steel. Three or four forced cycles will burn out a residential motor.

Confirm the diagnosis (without touching anything)

    • Look at the long horizontal spring(s) above the door opening. A healthy spring is one continuous coil. A broken spring shows a clear 1–2cm gap somewhere along its length.
    • If the door is part-open, leave it where it is. Don't crawl underneath.
    • If your car is inside and you absolutely need it out, see the section below.

Getting a car out of a closed garage

Two people, both adults. Pull the red emergency release cord on the opener (this only works if the door is fully closed). Now both lift from the centre of the door together — share the 50–110kg load between two backs. Have one person walk the door up to fully open and prop it with a 4x2 timber wedged in the track on one side. Get the car out. Do not close the door again — leave it propped open and call us. A door with no spring support will crash down if released.

    Security in the meantime

If the door is stuck open and you can't get a same-day callout, position a vehicle across the opening overnight or use the manual slide bolts (most sectional doors have them on the inside, on the bottom panel) to lock the door to the track on both sides. If the door is stuck closed, the house is secure — just wait for the tech.

What to expect from the repair call

A standard broken-spring callout in Toowoomba runs from $290 for a single torsion spring or from $390 for a matched pair (recommended — the second spring is at the same point in its life). The technician will also lubricate the rollers and hinges, inspect the cables, and run a balance test. Total time onsite is usually under an hour. Workmanship is warrantied.
